UNITY GROWING STRONG:TANZANIAN GOVERNMENT SAYS NO ROOM FOR OIL-GAS CONFLICT BETWEEN ISLAND AND MAINLAND
There is no dispute between mainland and island on oil and gas issue, the government has said today at the ongoing parliament session in Dodoma.
Regarding to a strong desire to reap the rewards from oil and gas within its boundaries, investors in the region will now be happy that the two governments have realized that it is better to share revenue than risk deterring investment.
Under the current constitution, formulated following the union between Tanganyika (mainland) and Zanzibar in 1964, the government of Tanzania has control over “Union matters” while the government of Zanzibar is left to control matters which solely affect Zanzibar.
But the ongoing parliament session this evening has settled the matter and agreed that Petroleum exploration will now be a Union matter and, as a result of the potential volumes of hydrocarbons in and around Zanzibar, will now benefit both parties.
